Tamron 20-40mm F/2.8 Di III VXD: A New Lens for Sony E-mount Cameras

Posted on

Tamron released the full-frame 20–40mm F/2.8 Di III VXD (Model A062), a standard large-aperture zoom lens for Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras.

The lens, according to the manufacturer, is the smallest and lightest in its class (length 86.5 mm and weight 365 g). Its image quality is ensured throughout the zoom range, and this is useful not only for photos, but also for video shooting, such as vlogging. The AF drive uses a VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor mechanism that is quiet and agile, delivering fast, accurate autofocus. In addition, with a minimum focusing distance of 0.17m at the wide end and a maximum zoom ratio of 1:3.8, close-up capabilities are provided for wide-angle macro photography.

The optical design of the Tamron 20-40mm F/2.8 lens consists of 12 elements in 11 groups, including four LD elements, two GM molded glass aspherical elements, and one hybrid aspherical glass (element).

Another feature of the novelty, according to the manufacturer, is soft and beautiful defocus blur and rounded bokeh, which, according to Tamron, is unique to the f / 2.8 aperture.

The manufacturer reports that the lens is very quiet, so it is ideal for both photography and video.
