Afghan girl

In late 1984, photographer Steve McCurry was taken to the Nazir Bagh Afghan refugee camp in Pakistan, where he was allowed to photograph in a girls’ classroom at school. A photograph of one of the girls was published on the cover of the popular National Geographic Magazine (June 1985). Her natural beauty, incredible eye expression and inner light, so contrasted with military action, immediately made the photograph a symbol of the struggle for independence.
